The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over the 100th locally manufactured maritime surveillance aircraft 'Dornier 228' (DO-228) to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
The aircraft is a landmark addition into the armory of the Indian Coast Guard for effective and sharp surveillance of country's coastal boundaries.
HAL now holds the distinction of manufacturing 100 DO-228 aircrafts for the nation.
The DO-228 is a multi-speciality aircraft which is equipped with sophisticated hardware which includes a 360 degree surveillance radar, Satellite Communication (SATCOM), Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) and Automatic Identification System (AIS).
With India's booming defence sector which has witnessed the highest growth in 2010-11, HAL is now eyeing a business of Rs 550 crores in the financial year 2011-12.
HAL will continue to produce sophisticated aircrafts for the defence forces in the coming years which include jets like the Intermediate Jet Trainer, light-weight 'Saras' aircraft and a Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA).
Established in 1960, HAL has given some of the highly sophisticated and multi-speciality aircrafts to the nation which include SH-748, ITG-3 Glider, an agriculture aircraft called HA-31 Basant and a basic trainer aircraft called HPT-32, Subramanian said. HAL also manufacturers India's most potent fighter jet the Su-30MKI at it's facility in Bangalore.
